Healing From Within: A Workshop for Healing Body and Mind, led by John Ross, L. Ac. June 29 - July 2 at Eco Living Studio in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
Classical Chinese Medicine teaches us that true healing comes from within. The macrocosm is complete within the microcosm. We have within us everything we need to maintain and restore health, so long as we allow our essence to come into balance with the forces of heaven and earth. Sometimes when we are really stuck, we need help restoring balance and allowing the energies of our psyche and soma to flow. Therapies like acupuncture unblock our energy and restore balance. Herbal medicine puts some new energy in the system when we are disconnected from our own resources.
There are also exercises involving body, breath and intention that can help us access our own ability to heal. Dao Yin is an ancient Daoist tradition of movement and breath exercises that was the precursor for what is known today as Qi Gong. There are many different traditions and systems of Dao Yin, some oriented toward martial arts, others towards healing and self-development.
This summer I will be leading a retreat in Pagosa Springs that will focus on a very simple and easy system of Dao Yin based on neo-natal movements. The exercises are gentle and very easy to do, even for people with significant physical limitations. Done lying on the ground, coordinating the breath with simple rhythmic movements, these exercises quickly access the deepest levels of psyche and soma, allowing us to release blockages and fixations from the inside out. As a result, it is possible to experience rapid healing of chronic pain, physical restrictions and deeply embedded emotional traumas.
I have chosen to teach this system of Dao Yin, because it is very powerful, but also very easy to do. During the retreat participants will learn a complete system of exercises that can be used for healing and for promoting health and vitality. I will also spend some time teaching principles and practices for healthy living based on the Chinese medical classics. Chapter 13 of the Yellow Emperor’s Simple Questions explains how health and disease are related to lifestyle and intention and how true healing occurs at the level of the embodied spirit. Chapter 2 explains the cycle of the four seasons and the dynamic interplay of yin and yang.
And of course there will be some time to soak in Pagosa’s mineral hot springs.
I began studying Chinese medicine in 1988. During my four years at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, I also studied Tai Ji Quan and Qi Gong. Since graduating in 1991, I have studied a Daoist lineage of classical Chinese medicine from Jeffery Yuen and Steven Alpern, as well as classical acupuncture techniques based on the I Jing from Dr. Richard Tan. I have also studied Buddhism with Tibetan masters for the last 23 years and spent several years on retreat. I am currently living in Flagstaff, AZ, where I practice acupuncture and herbal medicine.
The Healing from Within workshop will be held at the Eco Living Studios in downtown Pagosa Springs, June 29 - July 2. We will meet 8am to 11am and 3pm to 6pm on Friday through Sunday, and from 9am to noon on Monday. Cost of the seminar is $325. Pre-registration is required, as space at the studio is limited.
